The New York Times: NYT staffers, editors ‘tired of being yelled at’
- by admin
In an article on the NYT’s blog, an editor lamented that she and her colleagues are “tired” of being “taken out of context and treated like idiots for doing their jobs”.
The article, titled “What Happened to the NYT Staffer Who Called Me a Faggot?”, also detailed how a woman who said she was “hurt” after the NYT fired her boss’s colleague was fired, and that “the harassment of women in the NYT” was still rampant.
The article also claimed that the NYT is a “sexist, homophobic, transphobic, sexist, racist, xenophobic, ableist, anti-Semitic, misogynist, racist-supremacist, anti-” and other forms of prejudice-laden ideology”.
The NYT has faced accusations of sexism in the past, but has since come under pressure to improve its representation of women, people of colour, people with disabilities, immigrants, Muslims and others.
In 2015, The New Yorker published an article by Ta-Nehisi Coates, titled ‘The Case for Secularism’ in which he argued that “our institutions of power and authority” are “more dangerous” than “our enemies” in the 21st century.”
This is why it is important for us to speak up, to take action, to be heard, to know our rights, to understand the ways we are being dehumanised and abused,” he said.”
It is also why it matters that we, as citizens, are able to exercise our right to free speech, to speak freely in public spaces, to exercise this right in private.””
It matters that the institutions of government, media, academia, and the law can, and do, protect us.
